The heart behind Heart of a Champion

Heart of a Champion was founded in memory of Kelly Clayton Amerson, a beloved McNairy County educator whose passion for students and dedication to her fellow teachers left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. After Kelly passed away in 2013 from complications related to heart disease, her friends and family sought to honor her legacy by supporting the students and educators she cared for so deeply.

What began in 2015 as a few scholarships for McNairy County seniors funded through The Heart of a Champion Softball Tournament has grown into a thriving 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Over the past decade, Heart of a Champion has hosted a variety of successful fundraising events—including Laugh Your Heart Out with Heather Land, the Yellowstone-themed Dutton Dinners, a Mardi Gras Ball, and a Viva Las Vegas Casino Night—that have helped sustain and expand its mission.

As the organization has just celebrated 10 years of service, Heart of a Champion has proudly awarded $500,000 in scholarships, grants, and community support. This includes multiple annual scholarships for college- and trade-bound seniors, Teacher Grants, School Improvement Grants, and a Continuing Education Scholarship for current college students. The nonprofit has also broadened its outreach, providing assistance to individuals and families facing challenges throughout McNairy County.

Through God’s continued blessing and the unwavering support of local businesses and the community, Heart of a Champion remains dedicated to carrying forward Kelly Clayton Amerson’s legacy. With gratitude for the past decade and hope for the years to come, the organization is committed to strengthening McNairy County’s students, teachers, schools, and communities for generations.
